Is Big Lucky Casino actually on the level?
Keen to hear how you get on if you go π
I only did my first deposit online recently so a physical place is new territory for me. From what I can tell Big Lucky is a proper NZ venue under the usual rules, which at least means the pokies should be running fair rather than some mystery setup.
Total noob here though, so forgive the dumb question - if I walk in with say NZ$50 to play with, does the floor work anything like wagering a bonus online, or do I just spin and whatever's in my pocket is mine to keep or lose? Also curious whether anyone's actually been through the doors there, what the crowd's like on a weekend. π
Learning to clear wagering, go easy π
FreespinLord, "running fair" on a pub floor means the RTP is set to the legal minimum and it stays there. No customer-friendly variance like some sites claim. If you go and win, good for you, but a cashout screenshot from the cage beats any glowing review. Keen to hear whether the place actually pays without drama.
RTP doesn't lie, win screenshots do.
Went through the doors at a place like that a while back, cage paid out no dramas when a session actually landed. Word is the floor pokies over there have been paying nicely lately, but Nick's got a point, a cashout from the cage tells you more than anything I could type π If I head along this weekend you know the rest.
Nick has a point about floor machines being tuned to the legal minimum, though that only tells you the long-run RTP, and on a small spin sample the volatility will still decide whether your session lives or dies. I'd budget a fixed NZ$ amount you're happy to lose, track how the pokies actually behave on the night, and judge the venue on whether the cage pays without dramas, that's the real test. If you do go, note the hit rate you're seeing; I'd genuinely be curious how it compares to what the online sites dish up.
I keep my own spin/hit spreadsheet π
Okay this might be a dumb one but go easy on me π
when you lot talk about the "legal minimum" RTP on floor pokies, what does that actually mean for my session? Like if I chuck NZ$20 in this weekend, is the machine basically set to eat more than an online one would? Still learning all this, so keen to hear before I head in π
New here, soaking it up.
No dumb question at all mate π basically "legal minimum" means the pub machine is set to return the lowest payout % the rules allow, so over thousands of spins it keeps a bit more than a looser machine would. But your NZ$20 sesh? That's all down to luck and volatility, my favourite floor pokie went dead for ages then coughed up a hit big last night that paid for the whole arvo, ah well π

Spinning reels dawn to dusk.
LuckyStreak, you said the cage paid no dramas, any chance you got a receipt or even remember roughly what the session returned? Everyone's happy to type "it paid", I'd rather see who actually got paid before I drive over. And NeonMaster's right that volatility decides a short session, which is exactly why the floor RTP talk matters less than whether they hand over the cash when you do land one.
Licence first, deposit after.
Auckland_Legend pretty much nailed the explanation, though I'd add one caveat: the floor minimum tells you very little about how a single session with NZ$20 will feel. I keep a sheet of RTP and volatility for the pokies I play, and honestly the hit rate matters more than RTP for a short visit. A machine returning a lower long-run figure can still pay you steadily at 20c a spin, while a higher-returner with brutal variance can eat your twenty in six dead spins and hand it all back in one bonus.
I've been through the doors at a couple of the six casinos myself, usually when I'm in town for a conference, and the cage has always settled without fuss. What I'd actually check before driving over is which titles are on the floor, if the machine pits are mostly older low-volatility cabinets, your NZ$20 will buy you a much longer arvo than a floor full of high-variance stuff.
I keep my own spin/hit spreadsheet π
WinLive's got it right, hit rate is what wrecks a short session. If anyone's actually been through Big Lucky's doors though, I'd still want to hear about the cage paying out before I bother driving over.
Cashout screenshot or it didn't happen.
Win24 summed up my whole spreadsheet philosophy in one line, and I've got the receipts folder to prove it. I log every venue session in a notebook, date, machine type, in and out. The caveat I'd add to the hit-rate point: at a physical venue you can't even see the published return the way you can with a pub pokie placard, so your sample of one weekend visit tells you almost nothing about the floor's generosity. What you CAN judge in person is the cage. Queue length, whether staff pay out without the third-degree, whether the ATM next to the door is getting hammered by punters walking out flat. Those are the tells I'd watch for on a first visit. I'd drive over once with a small bankroll purely as reconnaissance, then decide whether the place earns a second trip.
RTP is a long-run number.
Honestly I'm a total noob here π
but reading this thread makes me want to just drive over and see the cage myself - even a small NZ$20 session would answer more questions than ten pages of posts. If I go this weekend I'll report back with what actually happened. Anyone else keen to meet there? π°
Keen as, BigWinOrBust4Life! I'm still learning bonuses so honestly a NZ$20 field trip sounds perfect π count me in if you go this weekend, would love to see the cage pay out myself π°

@Win24 cage speed is the only real test mate, everything else is forum noise. I've had one payout session at Big Lucky, wasn't huge, a couple hundred NZ$, and the cage had it sorted without drama. Wasn't a five minute wait either, but the lad in front of me was doing a full cash-out on pokies winnings and it still got processed clean.
My advice from years of bonus grinding: take NZ$20 in, bet small, and the moment you're up, walk to the cage with it. Bankroll discipline wins more often than any hot machine talk. If the kids going this weekend want a third, I'm based in Palmy so it's not far for me, happy to compare notes after πΈπ°
Bonus taken, wagering cleared.

@JoshLuck1984 same experience here mate, cage paid out my last win no drama either, which is more than I can say for the machines π€£ my notebook's basically a funeral record at this stage, every entry ends with "bank's gone" π NZ$20 field trip sounds like a bargain, cheaper than my usual donations πΏ

@LeeJandal funeral record made me snort, mate π heard that. Cage always pays sweet, it's the floor that eats you, that's the game everywhere though. Word is one of the pokies banks there's been running warm this week, can't say which, but those who know, know π€«
Jumping down for a squiz myself soonish, might tag along on the NZ$20 pilgrimage if the timing lines up π

@LeeJandal funeral record got a laugh out of me too π Cage paying sweet means sweet nothing mate, the floor claws it all back anyway, house always wins. Did you even withdraw that last "win" or did it go straight back into the pokies like mine did? π€‘πΈ
The house always wins.
@ModelLab withdraw? nah mate, half went straight back in like always π
but that's the fun innit, house always wins long run, doesn't mean the cage is dodgy. Big Lucky's floor treated me sweet last month, hit a juicy run on my favourite slot and walked out NZ$640 up before I gave half back π€π₯

@OtagoNZ paying clean at the cage is already more than my local pub pokies ever offered me π€£ my bankroll left Big Lucky in style, straight back into their floor though ππΏ
Came to hit, stayed to tilt πΏ
Seriously though, the cage is spot on, nah. But honestly, you always gotta keep going back to the action on the floor, like TomCashout said! π€© I was just there last night and it was absolute mayhem, so many big hits happening, totally buzzing! π₯
Backing my slot to the last spin.

@Rotorua_Local warm pokies bank, eh, that's how they get ya, I hear "running hot" and my bankroll starts writing its own eulogy π€£ last time I chased a "warm" machine it donated the whole arvo's wages in about forty minutes. Count me in for the NZ$20 trip anyway, one more spin, promise ππΏ
Nah, the whole place is mint! I hit big last night with my fave slot, walked out with like NZ$950! π€π₯π°

@TomCashout nice hit mate, NZ$950 is a solid night π€ I've only been to Big Lucky a couple times so far, no issues with the cage myself, cashed out NZ$120 with zero fuss. Keen to get back when I've got the funds again π
@MegaQueen same here mate, gave half back too π
but that's half the fun. Cage paid me no worries every time I've asked, this slot pays and always action on the floor. Dodgy? nah, reckon they're sweet π€π₯
